Ingrown toe nail is a common problem which usually occurs in the big toe. The medical term for this problem is onychocryptosis. It is caused by growth of the nail towards the skin. The pressure of the inward growing nail causes breakage of the skin leading to inflammation. It is caused by improper footwear ie tight and closed shoes, improper maintenance of toe nails, unhygienic maintenance of foot etc. People with thick and curved nails are often more susceptible to this problem than others. Ingrown toe nail can cause infection and pain. It can be easily treated at home with some of these simple remedies.
Here Are Some Effective Home Remedies For Ingrown Toe Nail Infection:
1. Epsom Salt Soak
Take hot water in a foot basin. Add 2 spoons of Epsom salt and dissolve it. Immerse your foot in the hot water bath for 10-15 minutes. Wash off with normal water and pat it dry. Repeat 2-3 times in a day to reduce the inflammation and pain.
Cut a piece of lemon and keep it on the toe with ingrown nail. Take a cotton cloth or bandage and tie the lemon piece around the toe. Leave it overnight. Repeat the procedure very night for good results. Lemon has anti-bacterial properties which help in healing the infection of the toe.
3. Tea Tree Oil
Clean the foot thoroughly and wipe it dry. Apply few drops of tea tree oil on the infected ingrown toe nail. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Later wear a pair of white, cotton socks and leave it overnight. Tea tree oil helps to fight fungal infection. Therefore it helps to reduce the inflammation and discomfort felt in the infected toe.
Mix 2 spoons of turmeric powder with a little mustard oil to make a thick paste. Apply this paste on the infected toe nail. Leave it for 30-40 minutes. The turmeric paste has anti-septic properties and will help to get rid of the infection due to the ingrown nail.
Cut a piece of onion and press it on the infected toe. Onion can also be used as a paste. Grind an onion into a thick paste. Apply it on the toe with ingrowing nail. Onion helps by reducing the inflammation associated with an ingrown nail.
