The common ingredient in most of the herbal bug bite relief remedies is calendula infused oil. Plantain leaves are an effective alternative. If dried calendula flowers are not available, you can replace calendula with plantain leaves. Other ingredients are beeswax and a blend of essential oils such as peppermint, lavender, chamomile, vetiver and tea tree oils. To store the bug bite cream you will need empty lip balm tubes.

Prepare Calendula Infused Oil

To prepare calendula infused oil, you will need ½-ounce of dried calendula flowers and 4 ounces of olive oil, sunflower oil or any vegetable oil of your choice. Put the dried flowers in a spice grinder and grind into fine powder. Put the powdered herb in a clean jar. Pour oil over the herb. With a clean stick stir the oil to blend it with the herb. Cover the jar with a brown paper. Keep the jar in the sunlight everyday for up to two weeks. Gently shake the jar once a day.

Mix Calendula Oil with Beeswax

Once the calendula infused oil is ready for use, pour three tablespoons of the oil in a pan and add a tablespoon of beeswax. Use a double boiler to warm the oil and beeswax on low heat. Stir to combine the melted beeswax with the oil.

Add Essential Oil

After the beeswax has melted and combined with the calendula infused oil, turn off the heat. Add 3 drops of lavender oil, 5 drops of peppermint oil, 2 drops of vetiver essential oil, 2 drops of German chamomile essential oil and one drop of tea tree essential oil. Stir to evenly distribute the essential oils in the calendula oil and beeswax mixture.

Pour the mixture in the empty lip balm sticks. After the mixture hardens, your bug bite stick is ready for use.
