10 Simple Home Remedies For Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes an inflammation in the wrist due to compression of the nerves in that region. Carpel tunnel is an area of high density of nerves in the wrist which is surrounded by a connective tissue band. A swelling in this tissue compresses all the nerves, causing inflammation and swelling. The basic cause of this swelling is overworked wrists. Spending long hours doing typing works, or using any form of instruments that require constant hand and finger movement, can cause numbness, swelling, pain and weakness in the hands. Pregnancy, hypothyroidism, too much weight and arthritis can also be a cause of this syndrome.

Rest

This is the easiest therapy for any pain relief. When the pain aggravates, it is best to take a break from work. Just move your wrists and shake your hands to resume blood circulation. Only when the pain subsides, should work be resumed.

Massage

A good massage can treat symptoms of CTS effectively. We can use coconut oil/olive oil for a massage, but mustard oil is highly recommended. Mustard oil has healing and pain relieving properties which help to pull out all the pain from the wrists. It can stimulate blood flow to the median nerve and reduce pain and numbness. A  slow massage on the inflamed wrist can be done for 8-10 minutes.

This fruit contains an enzyme called bromelain that has pain reducing qualities. These can be eaten fresh, which is best or the tinned option can also be used. Salads using ginger, turmeric, papaya and pineapple can be tossed as papaya and ginger contain proteolytic enzymes that help in reducing inflammation.

An icepack can be rubbed and massaged on the painful wrist to lessen the swelling. A 20 minutes of cold compress given to the inflamed region can help in reducing the swelling. This can be done 3-4 times a day depending on the intensity of the pain. Some therapists suggest alternating between hot and cold compresses can also be a good way of pain reduction.

Heat a bowl of water and add 2 tsp of mustard powder. Soak your hands in this warm water for 20 minutes to reduce the numbness and pain of CTS. The blood circulation gets a boost and the stiff muscles ease up and start moving around due to the heat properties of mustard.

Cinnamon is loaded with potassium, magnesium, vitamin B all of which are known to reduce the symptoms of CTS. 2-4 gms of cinnamon is recommended daily to improve blood circulation. We can 1 tsp of cinnamon with warm water, 2-3 times a day. 1 tsp of honey with 1 tsp of cinnamon can be mixed and had in the morning every day.

Chamazulene, cyclic ethers and bisabolol are active compounds in chamomile tea that contain anti-inflammatory properties. This tea can easily be taken 2-3 times a day and will help to rejuvenate the system also.

This is known for it’s powerful healing and repairing qualities. 1 tsp of turmeric mixed in warm milk and taken at night before sleeping is said to reduce pain. The numbness in the wrist often gets aggravated at night which can be controlled with turmeric intake. You can add 1 teaspoon of clarified butter to the glass of turmeric and milk to enhance its benefits.

Grape Seed Extract 

The extracts of grapes can be used to treat CTS. It contains Pycnogenol which is a compound assisting in healing this syndrome. 500gms of the seed extract taken 2-3 times a day can help in reducing the pain.

Prayer

This is an exercise that can reduce the symptoms like pain, tingling sensations and swelling. Fold your hands together in a prayer position and lower it till you feel the pull. Hold in that position for a count of 10 and back. Repeat this 10 times.
