The varicose vein is a condition of swollen veins in the legs. When veins become weak due to reasons like pregnancy, obesity and standing for long hours, this problem can arise. These veins are unable to carry blood smoothly, get tangled at places, blood pools are formed which leads to clots and swelling. Severe conditions can lead to rupture and haemorrhage. It is more common in women than men. Though medications are available, but certain lifestyle changes and few home remedies is all that is required to cure varicose veins.

Walking, running, swimming or cycling. Go for any of these to maintain a proper body weight and healthy body. Obesity is highly responsible for the formation of varicose veins and swelling in the legs. Exercising also induces blood flow to the legs and strengthens the blood walls to carry blood smoothly. If unable to exercise, some kind of activity must be incorporated into the daily regime to keep the limbs agile.
The legs which are prone to swelling and related problems should be kept at an elevated position for at least 20 minutes a day. They should be elevated above the heart level. This activity can be done while relaxing, sitting watching tv, reading etc. It helps improve blood circulation.
Avoid sitting continuously for long hours at a desk job. Take small breaks for tea, coffee, washroom visits. Move the legs, stretch and rotate the feet to restore movement of blood. Give it a light hand massage if possible. Sitting long with legs crossed can aggravate this problem, so change sides and alternate pressure from the legs.
A castor oil massage is said to reduce inflammation in the legs and strengthen the blood capillaries. It should be done regularly every night before going to bed to release the pain and cure the problem of varicose veins.

The seeds of horse chestnut contain Aescin, a compound that can counter the release of harmful enzymes that weaken the blood capillaries. But first the poison called esculin that is present in this fruit has to be extracted. Horse chestnut extract is used for consumption as it is not recommended to be used in the raw form. This herb is said to cause few side effects so caution has to be exercised before using it.
The seeds of grapes, that are often discarded, can high amounts og vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid and antioxidant namely oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes(OPC). OPC is known to strengthen the connective tissues and strengthen blood capillary walls and also reduce inflammation. They also assist the formation of collagen with the help of vitamin C that maintains the elasticity of the capillary walls. They also protect them from the harmful effects of free radicals which can damage the viens. The seeds can be chewed raw or can be mixed in water or tea in powdered form.
Grape Seed Oil
Not only the seeds but its oil is also beneficial for varicose veins as it contains OPC, which is highly anti-inflammatory in nature. Mix 3 tsp og grapeseed oil with 3 tsp of jojoba oil. To this mix add 8 drops of peppermint/lemon oil. Massage this mixture into the legs, with upward strokes. Do this daily for 1-2 months to see results.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Massage the feet using apple cider vinegar to relieve the symptoms of varicose veins like swelling, pain and weakness. Or, mix 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and have it 2 times a day for at least a month. We can also soak a gauze in apple cider vinegar and leave it on the affected area for 20 minutes.
This is an excellent home remedy for varicose veins. It contains vitamin C, bioflavonoids which eases the pain ans inflammation. Regular intake can also reduce the chances of severe conditions like rupture and haemorrhage.
This herb has astringent properties and also contains gallic acid that can help reduce swelling. Soak a gauze in witch hazel and place it on the affected area for 20 minutes. Repeat this at least 3 times a day for 1-2 months. Alternatively, soak the legs in a tub of warm water in which 20 drops of distilled witch hazel has been added. This will relieve the pain and swelling of the legs.
Put the cloves of 6 sliced garlic pods in a glass jar and add the juice of 3 oranges. Now add 2 tabs of olive oil and leave this mix for 12 hours. After 12 hours give the jar a shake and take some mixture, apply to the legs and give it a nice massage for 15 minutes. Wrap the legs with a cloth and leave it overnight. This remedy has to be followed for a few months to see positive results.
