5 Simple Home Remedies For Age Spots


Age spots, also known as liver spots, are flat spots, brown to black in color, that appear on the areas of the skin exposed to the sunlight. They are usually common in older adults, hence, the name age spots. Although harmless, age spots are a cosmetic issue. A number of home remedies are known to be effective in fading the age spots and evening out the skin tone. Home remedies are safer alternatives to the chemical bleaches or skin-lightening products. 1. Lemon Juice

The skin lightening property of citric acid present in fresh lemon juice helps in fading the age spots. Take few slices of fresh lemon and apply them directly to the age spots. Leave them on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes. With regular application, lemon juice helps in getting rid of the age spots in six to twelve weeks.[1]

2. Yogurt, Lemon Juice And Baking Soda

Yogurt, lemon juice and baking soda are combined together and used as a remedy for age spots. Lactic acid in yogurt and citric acid in lemon juice work together in lightening the dark spots on the skin. Mix six tablespoons of plain yogurt with three tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and ten to twelve tablespoons of baking soda. Scrub the affected areas with the paste for about two minutes. Leave it on the skin for 20 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water.[2]

3. Onion Juice

Take a slice of red onion and rub it on the age spots. The acidity of fresh onion juice helps in lightening the age spots. For better result, onion juice is combined with other skin lightening ingredients such as lemon juice or vinegar. Combining onion juice with apple juice in equal proportions and applying the mixture to the affected areas also seems to help in fading the age spots.[3]

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

To lighten the age spots, apply a small amount of undiluted apple cider vinegar directly to the dark spots on the skin. Apply the vinegar several times a day. It usually takes a couple of weeks to notice the result.[4]

5. Castor Oil

Castor oil is considered an effective remedy for age spots. Apply it directly to the age spots or mix it with some baking soda and rub the mixture on the affected area. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.[5]
