6 Effective Home Remedies For Asthma

Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease, in which the airways become blocked / narrowed. The narrowing and swelling of the airways due to the build up of thick mucus, can interfere with the normal breathing process and hinder the flow of oxygen into the lungs.  Some of the classic symptoms associated with an asthma attack include, shortness of breath, a feeling of tightness around the chest, a distinctive wheezing sound when the person breathes and intense coughing fits. An asthma attack can be triggered by pet dander, pollen in the air, mold and / or dust mites. Fortunately, there are numerous beneficial home remedies which can ward off and even reduce the intensity of an asthma attack.

Here Are 6 Beneficial Home Remedies For Asthma

Warm Mustard Oil

Massaging the chest vigorously with warm, mustard oil, is a time honored home remedy to reduce the intensity of an asthma attack. The warm mustard oil can help to open up the clogged respiratory passageway. This in turn can improve the air flow into the lungs.

Heat approximately two tablespoons of mustard oil. Transfer the warm (not hot) mustard oil into a clean container. Dip your fingertips in the warm oil. Apply the mustard oil evenly on the chest and massage vigorously. The warmth from the heated oil which permeates the airways can instantly reduce the symptoms of an asthma attack. For added benefit, you can incorporate half a teaspoon of pure camphor to the warm mustard oil. Repeat this home remedy several times a day to ward off further asthma attacks.

During an asthma attack the airways can become clogged with thick mucus buildup. To reduce the buildup of mucus and to ease the feeling of breathlessness, have a teaspoon or two of honey. The anti-inflammatory activity of honey can help to reduce the inflammation inside the airways. Furthermore, honey acts as a powerful expectorant and breaks up the phlegm (mucus) which collects inside the respiratory tract.

To prepare this home remedy, dilute one tablespoon of pure, dark honey in a glass of warm water. Add a dash of freshly milled cinnamon powder to this solution. Now sip the warm honey solution slowly to get relief from the feeling of breathlessness.

Gooseberries are an extremely popular home remedy to ward off recurrent asthma attacks. ‘Emblica officinalis’ or gooseberry is a potent source of vitamin C, and it also contains powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Studies have shown that eating foods rich in vitamin C like Indian gooseberries can keep airways open during an asthma attack. The antioxidants which are present in Indian gooseberries can reduce the production of histamines during an asthma attack.

To prepare this particular home remedy, crush four to five large gooseberries. Add a tablespoon of honey to the crushed gooseberries. Consume this mixture a couple of times every day to reduce the intensity of an asthma attack.

Studies have indicated that asthma patients who consume onions regularly experience fewer asthma attacks. Onions contain high amounts of flavonoids. Flavonoids are known for their anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties. Onions also contain a compound called quercetin. Quercetin can reduce the amount of histamines which are released by the immune system into the blood stream during an asthma attack. Furthermore, the high amounts of the anti-inflammatory sulphur compound – Allyl propyl disulphide – which is present in onions can significantly reduce the intensity of an asthma attack.

Asthma patients are advised to eat small amounts of raw onions twice a day to lessen the incidence of asthma attacks.

Bitter Gourd

Bitter gourd, also called bitter melon, contains specific substances which act as bronchodilators. The bronchodilator properties of bitter gourd can reverse the contraction of airway cells during an asthma attack. This in turn can help asthma patients to breathe easily.  To prepare this home remedy, mix approximately half a cup of pure bitter gourd juice with half a teaspoon of finely crushed basil leaves and a teaspoon of pure, dark honey. Drink this concoction during an asthma attack to get instant relief.

Consuming figs can help to relieve some of the discomfort a person is likely to experience during an asthma attack. The figs contain several important compounds which help to lessen the production of thick mucus. Reducing mucus production can open up the airways.

Soak three to four dried figs in a bowl of warm water overnight. In the morning, consume the figs on an empty stomach. You will notice a marked reduction in the incidence of debilitating asthma attacks.
