We take utmost care of babies and try all means to save and protect it from harsh exposure to chemicals. But little do we realize that the baby products, which are of the highest quality and brands can be carrying toxins in them. The babies skin is extremely sensitive and absorbs anything that is applied on it. So instead of going for readymade baby products we can make our own homemade baby creams, oils and powders etc. These are cheaper to the pockets too. But always perform a sensitivity test before applying these homemade products on the baby.
The Home Made Products Are-
Diaper Rash Cream –
The bum of the babies become sore due to constant wetness and cause a lot of discomfort to the infant. The diaper rash cream should not only be soothing but heal the rashes and prevent them from recurring.
3/4 cup shea butter, 1/4 cup coconut oil, 3 drops each of lavender oil and tea tree oil. Whip the shea butter and coconut oil well till it becomes light and frothy. Add the essential oils and further whip till they all mix in well. Now put them in clean jars and they can be stored in cool, dry hygienic conditions. Apply when changing diapers and after a bath.
Shampoo And Body Wash–
Though babies do not require shampoos and soaps, as their bodies contain natural oils that the skin produces and cleanses the body while taking a bath, but sometimes the body of the babies smells of stale milk and poop which should be washed off. The best soap for babies is castile soap and we can make a shampoo using that.
1 cups liquid castile soap, 4 cups filtered water, 3 drops each of lavender oil and lemongrass oil. Mix in all these items and use as a wash whenever required. The essential oils calm and soothe the babies body and induce better sleep after the bath.
Recent studies have proved that popular baby powder brands contain toxins that are harmful to the baby. Make this homemade powder at home and be careful while applying as they may contain slightly bigger particles that can go in the babies eyes or mouth.
1/2 cup cornstarch, 1/2 cup arrowroot powder, 1 tbsp white clay Mix all these together and keep in a dry airtight jar.
We all massage the babies body to make its bones stronger, skin softer, and give its tired limbs some comfort. The massage oil should contain minerals and also be soft on the babies skin. Some people prefer using coconut oil as it is natural, nonallergic, and safe. But we can also use other massage oils such as-
2 tab calendula flowers and 2 tab chamomile flowers(both organically grown),1 cup apricot kernel oil/ organic olive oil. Infuse these flowers in the oil which is kept in an air tight jar. Leave it for a 6-8weeks till the oil has a nice orange shade. Strain and use for massage. add 1 tsp lavender oil for its calming effects.
The skin of the baby is super soft so all that has to be done is to retain the suppleness and hydration of the skin. Take some dry oatmeal and blend well into the blender till it is a very fine powder. Now add this powder to the warm bath soak and bath the baby with this baby bath. The baby’s skin feels even softer than before.
Natural baby wipes are tender on the skin of the baby and will promote quicker healing.
A roll of paper towel cut into half, 1/6 cup castile soap, 1/6 cup olive oil,2-3 tea tree oil, 2 cups warm water. Place all the liquids in a jar and shake it.Take the half paper towel roll and remove the centre cardboard and immerse it into the jar. Now when required just pull out single towels and use as wipes.
Natural and organic products should be used for making baby creams and they should be of the best quality.
2 cups olive oil, 1/8 cup grated beeswax, 2 drops lavender oil, 2 drops vitamin E oil, 1 cup chamomile and calendula flowers each, 1/2 cup comfrey leaves.
Infuse the flowers in a jar of olive oil and leave it for 2-3 weeks. Then strain and heat the oil in a double boiler for about an hour on low flame. Add the beeswax and let it melt completely. Remove from the flame, add the essential oils and cool and store in airtight jars.
I hope you enjoy the simplicity and usefulness of natural products for your baby.
