Plantain, also known as greater plantain or Plantago major, is a type of herb frequently used in the folk medicines of Europe and North America for treating skin diseases. Despite the similarity in names, the plantain leaves should not be confused with plantain, a vegetable of the banana family. Salve made with the plantain leaves is used for treating skin irritations. It helps in reducing itching and discomfort following insect bites and allergic reactions. It also helps in soothing the sunburned skin. The anti-inflammatory property of plantain leaves makes the herbal salve a suitable remedy for psoriasis and eczema. A homemade plantain salve will always come in handy in treating cuts and wounds and for fast relief from skin irritation and itching.
Here Is How You Can Make Plantain Salve:
Ingredients You Will Need
To make half a cup of plantain salve, you will need 2/3-cup of fresh chopped plantain leaves or 1/3-cup of dried plantain leaves, half a cup of olive oil and half a cup of beeswax.
To further boost the healing property of the salve, you can add lavender essential oil or goldenseal to the recipe. Coconut oil with its soothing property is an excellent alternative to olive oil.
Prepare Plantain Infused Oil – Slow Infusion Method
Put the plantain leaves in a clean and dry mason jar. Pour oil over the leaves. Place the lid on the jar. Keep the jar aside in a clean and dry area at room temperature for 10 days. This will help all the plantain compounds with medicinal properties to seep into the oil.
Prepare Plantain Infused Oil – Fast Infusion Method
Although the slow infusion method has the highest potency, when time is a constraint, you can infuse the oil by applying heat. The heating process slightly reduces the effectiveness of the infused oil. To speed up the infusion process, place a pot containing the plantain leaves and the oil on a large pan containing simmering water. Simmer the water on low heat for 30 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat, cover the pot with a lid and leave it aside until the oil cools down.
Make The Salve
Strain the oil and discard the herbs. Using a double boiler, melt the beeswax. Add the plantain infused oil to the melted beeswax and combine them. Pour the salve in a clean and dry container. The plantain salve can be preserved for a year.
