Psoriasis is a disease that can happen to anyone and at any part of the body. It is a non-contagious chronic disease which can be genetic or because of a weak immune system.
It is one of the easiest treatments for mild psoriasis. Salicylic acid is easily available over-the counter and does not need a doctor’s prescription. Salicylic acid causes the outermost layer of the skin to peel away gently. In case of psoriasis, the acid softens the scales that eventually fall away. A word of caution, do not overuse salicylic acid as it can cause skin irritation and hair loss.
The simplest and highly effective treatment for psoriasis is soaking in the sun. To top it all, this treatment is entirely free of cost. Spending around 10 minutes in the sun can help in healing psoriasis. You can extend your time up to 30 minutes. Just remember to apply sunscreen on the unaffected part before you step out in the sun. Do not overdo it or you may suffer from sunburn. Also, discontinue any treatment that can cause you to be sun sensitive.
Coal tar is yet another effective solution to treat mild psoriasis. The tar used in this case is made from coal and wood like pine and juniper. Coal tar reduces the skin cell growth and also improves the appearance of the affected area, reduces scaling and inflammation. In general the higher the concentration of tar, better the treatment. However, one should always conduct a patch test before beginning the treatment. If the tested area turns red, moisturize the psoriasis skin well before applying coal tar. Also, remember to apply sunscreen or limit sun exposure, as coal tar can make you sun sensitive.
Adding a few ingredients to your bathtub can also be beneficial for psoriasis. Adding oil, oatmeal, Epsom salt or Dead Sea salt to your bath helps in ease off itching and shed scales caused by psoriasis. For this kind of treatment, soak in your bath for at least 15 minutes and moisturize your skin properly after a bath in order to lock in the moisture.
Olive oil is not only healthy for consumption; it can also help psoriasis patients get some relief. Application of olive oil or vegetable oil on the affected area helps in locking in nutrients and moisture within them. Massaging olive oil on the scales before shower can help loosen up the dry patches.
Avoid All Perfumes And Dyes
Most of the soaps and perfumes have artificial dyes and fragrances included in them. These products surely help you to smell divine all day but they can also aggravate your psoriasis issues. Switch to products that are specifically made for sensitive skin, as they are free from any substances that can irritate or inflame the skin.
Fish oil helps psoriasis patients. Fish oil can either be applied directly over the affected area or can be consumed in the form of dietary supplements.
Keeping your skin well moisturized at all times also helps preventing and treating psoriasis. Use a humidifier at home or office to moisten the air around you. In addition, application of a daily moisturizer prevents skin from dryness, itchiness and helps in healing damaged skin faster. Consult a dermatologist for the most effective ointment or cream for keeping your ski moisturized.
